"The goal of Virtual Event Lab is to expand our conceptual toolkit for erasing the limitations of time and space."

Virtual Event Lab is a collaborative project supported by the New York State Council of the Arts and other sponsors.

Global + Local: Culture and Collaboration in the 21st Century

We believe strongly in the potential of one human technology (digitally networked sensing devices) to replace another human technology (expensive cars and airplanes powered by expensive and destructive energy sources) in connecting people in every part of the globe. The technologists are doing their job.  Every year the digital devices and networks get less expensive and more capable.  Already 79% of people in the underdeveloped world have cell phones connected by wireless networks. We the users (artists, creators, designers, collaborators, educators and innovators) now need to do our job and discover how to architect the available technology to make what we want to make and work with who we want to work with. Live group interaction has a power that individual and/or asynchronous communication never had.  We have an opportunity to push the boundaries of what’s possible until we achieve that elusive goal … the potential for a deep productive and collaborative relationship between any two creative groups anywhere on the world. Real long-term multi-directional cultural exchange has the power to change the world.
